Protect your wedding guests from pesky mosquitoes with our tips for outdoor weddings and get married without the itch.
Pay attention to time and place
Generally, the hours between dusk and dawn are the most active times for mosquitoes. This time usually coincides with wedding activities, so take extra precautions if you're planning an outdoor wedding. Some mosquitoes can bite at any time, so it's safest to protect yourself with a shield.
Also, remember that mosquitoes breed in standing water and won't stray far from where they breed. So if you're getting married by a lake or pond, there is a good chance that there will be a lot of mosquitoes there. Do everything in your power to reduce areas of standing water around your outdoor wedding, and make sure all containers are emptied before guests arrive.
Use fans outdoors
Mosquitoes are pretty weak flyers. So if you set up outdoor fans, you can keep them away from your guests, food and drinks. Even if you only set the fans on a low setting, you should create enough airflow to keep mosquitoes away from your wedding guests. Fans also help disperse the carbon dioxide we emit, which is a major attraction for mosquitoes. If it's a warm day, fans also help keep guests cool!
Keep lawns and shrubs trimmed whenever possible.
Mosquitoes like to hide in certain places before they bite, and the place they prefer to hide is vegetation. They also feed on plant nectar (unless the females are sucking on your blood, of course), so they spend a lot of time in tall grasses or brushy areas.
Before your guests arrive, make sure your venue’s lawn is mowed and hedges, shrubs and trees are trimmed. This will help reduce mosquito populations and reduce the risk to your guests.
Choose flowers that mosquitoes don't like
Flowers are an essential part of most traditional weddings. Be smart and choose beautiful flowers that not only create a moody ambiance, but also repel mosquitoes Consider floral arrangements with bee balm (Monarda), silk flower (Ageratum), lavender or marigolds.
The best way to keep mosquitoes at bay is to bring along repellant, and we’re not talking about sticky bug sprays and citronella candles. It’s time you put up a new method of defense.
